About a Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction
This second volume of Traces explores the creation of A Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction by David Geselson. Three years ago, Katie Mitchell created this monologue at the Théâtre de Vidy–Lausanne. To stage it, she proposed a set of precise specifications: the show had to emit as little carbon as possible. In France, the MC93 invited David Geselson to create his own version of the project, inspired by these specifications.
While it seems possible to create a show that addresses the catastrophe, doing so without contributing to it oneself is a complex – and fascinating – challenge. Through the notes of David Geselson and his collaborators, design sketches and interviews, the booklet delves into the issues, challenges, successes and failures that arise when attempting to create an eco-responsible show.
